HILLSBORO FIRE BURN-TO-LEARN RESCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 14

News Release from Hillsboro Fire and Rescue
Posted on FlashAlert: November 9th, 2017 2:10 PM
On Tuesday, November 14, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue will conduct a training house burn at 115 NE 30th Avenue in Hillsboro. This exercise previously scheduled for Saturday, November 4 was canceled due to the death of off duty Hillsboro firefighter Ryan Grimaldi on November 3rd.

The Burn-to-Learn exercise will give valuable live-fire training in a residential structure to Hillsboro's newly-hired firefighter recruits, as well as the department's career and volunteer firefighters.

The Burn-to-Learn exercise will begin at 9am when Hillsboro Fire & Rescue training officers set small fires, one at a time, inside the house. Training officers will then accompany firefighters inside to extinguish the fires. The drill will be supervised by experienced, career firefighters and will adhere to strict safety guidelines. Firefighters have ensured that all that remains in the home is normal, non-hazardous building materials. Once the interior training is completed, the house will be allowed to burn in a controlled and safe manner. There will be teams of firefighters at the scene from beginning until all flames are extinguished.

Motorists can expect that traffic on E Main Street from NE 28th Avenue to NE 32nd Avenue will be slowed from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Traffic will be blocked from entering NE 30th Avenue from E Main Street.

The home used in this training exercise was donated by the owner to make way for future construction on the property.

PARKING FEE WAIVED FOR 'GREEN FRIDAY' AT OREGON STATE PARKS

News Release from Oregon Parks and Recreation Dept.
Posted on FlashAlert: November 9th, 2017 9:34 AM
RE-ISSUED: CORRECTED DATE IN FOURTH PARAGRAPH

Oregon State Parks invites you to play for free on Nov. 24 in celebration of 'Green Friday.' The agency will waive day-use parking fees in 26 Oregon State Parks the day after Thanksgiving.

"We started this tradition three years ago to encourage people to opt outside," said OPRD director Lisa Sumption. "Why not get some fresh air with your family and create a new holiday tradition?"

To help celebrate, the nonprofit Oregon State Parks Foundation is offering free hot drinks and snacks at Tryon Creek State Natural Area, Fort Stevens State Park, Rooster Rock State Park, Silver Falls State Park and Cape Blanco State Park. Refreshments -- donated by Starbucks Coffee, Nossa Familia Coffee, Smith Tea, Stevens Cocoa and KIND Bars -- will be served by volunteers from the local Friends Groups.

Parking is free year-round at almost all state parks; the waiver applies to the 26 parks that charge $5 daily for parking. The waiver applies from open to close on Nov. 24, except at Shore Acres State Park, where it expires at 3 p.m. for the Holiday Lights event that runs Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve. A list of parks that require day-use parking permits is at bit.ly/OregonStateParksParking.

Daily parking permits can be purchased on site, but one- and two-year passes are also available online at store.oregonstateparks.org.

________

November is Men's Health Awareness Month. People across the country are once again recognizing this important effort by growing out their facial hair, as part of the "No Shave November" campaign.

The Sheriff's Office is once again joining the fight.

And this year, it's also a contest.

Normally, CCSO grooming standards don't allow deputies to wear beards. If you've seen our deputies out in the community this month, you may have noticed that's changed. As part of a coordinated effort to raise awareness about men's health issues -- including the kinds of cancer that only affect men -- Sheriff Craig Roberts has once again decided to temporarily relax CCSO's grooming standards in order to allow uniformed members of the Sheriff's Office to participate.

In an Oct. 30 email to deputies, Undersheriff Ellington laid out the contest parameters: "There will be a friendly competition this year, and the teams are as follows: If you are a part of Patrol (including contract cities), Investigations, Admin, IT or Records you are on one team. If you are a part of the Jail, Community Corrections, or Civil you are on another team. The winning side will not only gain bragging rights, but will also be rewarded for their achievement by being allowed to keep their facial hair until through December 31, 2017."

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION WELCOME

Want to participate? The public is welcome to contribute to CCSO's effort. The Sheriff's Office No-Shave November Teams are online here:

TEAM 1 -- Patrol, Contract Cities, Investigations, Admin, IT, Records:
https://no-shave.org/team/Patrol

TEAM 2 -- Jail, Community Corrections, Civil:
https://no-shave.org/team/Corrections

During November, participants are encouraged to donate money they'd usually spend on shaving to educate people about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle. Participants are also encouraged to get a cancer screening during the month of November.

Below is the Sheriff's Office TEMPORARY relaxed grooming policy for the month of November 2017. The policy is currently scheduled to return to its previous terms promptly on Dec. 1, 2017 ... for the losing team.

Photos from previous No-Shave November campaigns are attached.
________

NOVEMBER 2017 GROOMING STANDARDS:

While we are adjusting our grooming standards for November only (listed below) -- allowing participating deputies to grow facial hair -- this needs to be done in a professional manner. Facial hair will need to be neatly trimmed and well-kept. As with the current grooming standards, Sheriff Roberts has final say.

Here is the Sheriff's Office temporary grooming policy for the month of November 2017. The policy will return to its previous terms promptly on Dec. 1, 2017.

FACIAL HAIR

Personnel may elect to have a beard or goatee. Beards and goatees will be neatly trimmed and at no time be longer than one inch when extended straight out from the skin surface.

A beard is defined as hair grown covering the face line in a continuous pattern from sideburns, along the cheek line, covering the chin and connecting with a mustache.

A goatee is hair that is grown in a continuous pattern including the chin and mustache but does not extend along the cheek line and does not connect to sideburns.

On Wednesday November 8, 2017, officers with East Precinct's Sex Trafficking Unit arrested a 57-year-old man in connection with the online luring of a child.

Mark A. Chervin was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Attempt Sodomy in the Third Degree, Online Sexual Corruption in the First Degree, Online Sexual Corruption in the Second Degree, Attempt Sexual Abuse in the Second Degree, and 20 counts of Luring a Minor.

This investigation began in early October when the Sex Trafficking Unit received a tip from the community regarding possible criminal activity perpetrated by Chervin. An undercover officer posing as an underage female on a social media account contacted Chervin. After the initial contact, Chervin repeatedly contacted the undercover officer in an attempt to build a sexual relationship with the officer who believed was an underage age female. Chervin expressed a desire to meet with her for purposes of a sexual nature.

Chervin designated a time and location in Southeast Portland to meet the juvenile female. When he arrived at the location the Portland Police Bureau's Sex Trafficking Unit took him into custody.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims. If you have information regarding Chervin or are a victim, please contact the Portland Police Bureau's Sex Trafficking Unit at 503-823-4867.

If you know someone that is a potential predator or a victim of this type of crime, please contact the Portland Police Bureau's Sex Trafficking Unit at 503-823-4800, the Sexual Assault Resource Center hotline 1-800-640-5311; or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, 1-800-843-5678 or via the Cyber Tipline: http://www.missingkids.org/CyberTiipline

Man Questioned After Early-Morning Shooting in Aloha

November 9, 2017 -- Early this morning, a man unintentionally shot his 16-year-old son while retrieving a handgun. The teen was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

On Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 2:39 a.m., Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a shooting call in the 21500 block of SW Peggy Court in Aloha. Upon arrival, deputies learned that Brian Matsuo, 38, unintentionally shot his 16-year-old son while retrieving a handgun.

The son sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries. He was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital. At this early stage, it appears he will survive his injuries.

Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit will continue to investigate and will ultimately forward their findings to the Washington County District Attorney's Office.

Total adherence to the four cardinal rules of gun safety will prevent almost all -- if not all -- unintended discharges of firearms:

1. Always treat all firearms as if they were loaded.
2. Never allow the muzzle of any firearm to point at anything you are not willing to shoot.
3. Never put your finger near the trigger until you are ready to fire.
4. Always be sure of your target, and what is behind and in front of it.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office encourages gun owners to store their firearms safely and securely to prevent unintentional shootings. Many inexpensive options exist -- including biometric gun safes -- to prevent unintended access to firearms.
