The victim killed during a disturbance late Tuesday night has been identified as 30-year-old Richard Whitemore of Portland.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner Determined Whitemore died of homicidal violence caused by a sharp force injury.

On Tuesday November 7, 2017, at 11:24 p.m., Central Precinct officers responded to the report of a stabbing in the area of Southeast 2nd Avenue and Southeast Morrison Street.

When officers and emergency medical personnel arrived on scene they located an adult male lying on the ground. A large amount of blood was observed around the man as emergency responders approached. Medical personnel provided the victim medical aid and transported him by ambulance to an area hospital where died of his injuries.

Based on preliminary information, investigators believe the victim and the suspect were involved in a fight on Southeast Morrison Street east of Southeast Water Avenue. During the fight the victim sustained serious injuries but was able to walk to Southeast 2nd Avenue and Southeast Morrison Street, where he fell to the ground. Community members observed the victim on the ground and called 9-1-1.

Officers continue to search for the suspect in this incident.

Detectives with the Portland Police Bureau's Homicide Detail and criminalists with the Forensic Evidence Division are responding to assist with this death investigation.

A member of the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy in the coming days to attempt to identify a cause of death. The cause of death and identity of the victim will not be released until after the autopsy and the next of kin have been notified.

This investigation is in its early stages and there is no additional information available at this time. Additional information will be provided through updates to this release when available.

The PIO is not responding to the scen of this investigation at this time.
